Job Description: Director, Accounting

 We are looking for:

An experienced accountant to oversee our Virtual Accounting Services for nonprofits and to supervise Public Media Company’s internal financials. An individual who is both numbers and people-oriented who has experience coordinating monthly closes, audits, budgets and forecasting.  A leader that is an outstanding communicator, supervisor, collaborator, and project manager.

What a typical day might be like:

Each day is filled with a variety of rewarding tasks that you will surely appreciate if you are the type of person that enjoys helping aid nonprofit managers in understanding and monitoring their performance.  You should have an advanced accounting foundation and have worked in relevant roles for 5+ more years and have industry experience of eight to ten years. You can successfully manage complex client engagements with little supervision to ensure client outcomes are achieved. You know how to prioritize multiple deliverables.

This position has the responsibility of providing accounting and financial consulting, and virtual CFO services to assigned clients. You maintain solid judgment while performing, directing, and reviewing the work of the Accounting Manager and Senior Accountant as well as work performed by clients and their staff. You can make decisions on most accounting and business operations matters. When unusual or complex situations arise, you collaborate with the CEO, other team members and the client to ensure a positive and appropriate resolution.

In leading client engagements, you have enough experience and vision to spot cost-saving or streamlining opportunities, anticipate issues and provide guidance. You will serve as the accounting lead for clients and ensure that good controls are in place to have clean and timely audits. You will have the chance to establish and foster meaningful client relationships as you help them understand the story behind the numbers and collaborate with them to plan their journey ahead. You are able to right-size the workload and time spent on client services based upon fees earned.

Your typical day may include the following tasks:

  • Oversee timely submission of payrolls, bill payments, transfer of funds
  • Supervise/review/close client books – monthly, quarterly, and annually
  • Present timely financial statements, variance analysis, forecast and narratives to clients, and designated committees or boards
  • Lead virtual-CFO strategy meetings with clients and other stakeholders
  • Address key transactions and grant awards, ensuring proper accounting treatment
  • Ensure appropriate accounting procedures, processes, and business practices are being followed
  • Supervise, train, and mentor Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, and client staff
  • Oversee and guide annual budgeting process for clients
  • Address special projects that may require more technical expertise
  • Ensure that all client services, including filings are completed on a timely basis
  • Ensure correct accounting procedures are being followed by clients and provide training and recommendations as needed
  • Coordinate the annual audit, 990, Corporation for Public Broadcasting filings as needed
  • Develop, refine, or implement client services to improve efficiency and accuracy
  • Provide technical support and guidance to PMC’s Accounting and Business Manager and Virtual Accounting team members
  • Engage in business development activities and prepare proposals and agreements for client services

This job might be for you if:

  • You know GAAP accounting and are a master of it
  • You stay organized on multiple projects and help others do the same
  • You are an excellent, proactive communicator and understand that includes being a good listener
  • You take good notes when needed and ask questions when something is not clear
  • You have experience managing and motivating a team
  • You have provided consulting services to clients and are comfortable in presenting financial information to client managers, committees, and boards
  • You are good at keeping a schedule and have proven methods to help you manage priorities and deadlines
  • You are detail-oriented and proofread things that you write or type to make sure they are accurate
  • You like numbers and you think working with accountants and clients would be fun

You might be a really good fit if:

  • You get things done and you take pride in doing them right
  • You have relevant accounting experience, including public accounting/audit experience, and have overseen audits
  • You have worked in public media and are experienced with grant reporting, including Corporation for Public Broadcasting grant reporting
  • You are great at task management and project management
  • You are readily able to manage client engagements and relationships to help ensure successful outcomes
  • You are extremely proficient with QuickBooks Online and Excel
  • You know how to problem-solve, be flexible in providing options for solutions, and are proactive in implementing improvements

The Pay and the Perks:

  • Salary Ranges: $90K to $110k, depending on experience and qualifications
  • Reports to:  CEO
  • In addition to your salary our full benefit package includes health, dental/vision reimbursement, life, and long-term & short-term disability coverage, 403(b) contributions, vacation, sick and holiday time, and a stipend for phone and internet.
  • Public Media Company is headquartered in Boulder CO with employees in multiple locations.
  • Applicants from CO, IL, MI, ME and WY are preferred.
  • If outside of Boulder, the position is virtual.
  • If located near Boulder, we have a hybrid work environment
